| With China's rapid development, huge market potential and increasing influence in the international community, Chinese language has become more and more popular and thus turned into a language with strong popularization momentum in the world. There are 30 million people learning Chinese worldwide and over 2,300 institutes of higher learning in 85 countries teaching Chinese. Chinese Proficiency Test for foreigners (HSK) has been taken 550,000 person-times and 80,000 people have come to China for Chinese learning. This is learned from the seminar on the research and future development strategies on textbooks of international Chinese studies and also the conference on the establishment of the International Chinese Studies Center of Beijing Language and Culture University recently held in Beijing.
According to introduction, Chinese language has made much headway in entering foreign institutes of higher learning, secondary and primary schools. Up to now, countries such as the United States, New Zealand, Japan, Thailand, Republic of Korea, Canada, Australia have included Chinese language into the subjects of college entrance examination. Textbooks on international Chinese studies play a very important role in popularizing Chinese language and Chinese culture worldwide. Among the five to six hundred kinds of textbooks for foreigners to learn Chinese, over 400 kinds, including serial textbooks for undergraduate level, serial short-term training textbooks, and serial textbooks for long-term advanced studies, are edited and published by Beijing Language and Culture University. It boasts an outflow of copyright for tens of textbook every year. The first textbook on teaching foreigners Chinese language published after the establishment of new China, "Chinese Language Textbook" and "Basic Chinese Language: Reader", "Practical Chinese Readers", "Elementary Chinese Textbook", "Conversational Chinese 301" and "Speaking Chinese". They have been very popular among readers and are all published by Beijing Language and Culture University. The newly established Research and Development Center for Textbook on Teaching Chinese to Foreigners of Beijing Language and Culture University is the nation's first institution specially dedicated to developing, research, compiling and popularizing textbooks on international Chinese studies. It will develop new-generation textbooks on teaching foreigners Chinese by organizing editing and teaching staff at home and abroad for them.
